zero carbon house has won the following awards

RIBA Award for architectural excellence 2010

The judges said: “John Christophers has transformed an end-of-terrace Birmingham house into a ground-breaking family home of rare quality, using low energy materials and environmental systems. It is the first UK retrofit house to achieve Level 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes….  The neighbours love it, particularly the cheery sunflowers in the front garden.

While externally its character is very different from the rest of the area, the property adds to the urban streetscape. Full of quirky, delightful and well considered details and is a robust and thoughtful design of an exceptional standard. In its first nine months of occupation the energy performance has outstripped even John Christophers’ high expectations, proving energy-efficiency doesn’t mean compromising architectural space.”

 RIBA Manser Medal Shortlist 2011

Considerate Constructors Award 2011

The judging panel said: “It was very obvious that an excellent working relationship has been built up with the client/architect on what is a difficult project because of the unique nature of the work in trying to achieve a ‘zero carbon’ house. The site team are to be congratulated on achieving and maintaining such an excellent level within the CCS Code of Considerate Practice.” It was won by Speller Metcalfe for its work on zero carbon house.

Constructing Excellence Award 2011

These go to the very best companies, collaborations and projects – sharing best practice and inspiring others to adopt new and better ways of working that deliver outstanding results. The judges said: “The clear winner was the John Christophers designed renovation and extension of an early Victorian semi-detached property. By achieving Code 6 of the Code for Sustainable Homes, this unique achievement provides a regional and national exemplar that can influence the upgrade and improvement of a vast amount of existing housing stock.”
